Let places of immense historical significance introduce themselves to you. Discover a taming wilderness of Skadar Lake and taste traditional specialties.
A docile valley, meandering river like in a fairy tale, the huge lake with blue wavy mountains disappear in the distance. A small place along the river of the same name, River Crnojevica rests in its unique landscape for more than five hundred years. In the second half of XV century, as a new capital of Montenegro was it settled in this valley, surrounded by green hills. A lovely chain of houses had been made of stone, some of which date from the middle of XIX century. They were erected during Montenegrin Prince Danilo’s rule period. In the out of date peaceful ambient, a bridge of stone admires itself in the reflection of the glassy surface of the river. Crossing the bridge, you will get to the St. Nikola monastery, where the plaque of stone witnesses the existence of the printing shop in which the first Balkan’s book in Cyrillic was printed.
Virpazar, once the main trades centre and then the place of the greatest resistance during World War II, today does it represent a peaceful little town, surrounded by the lake, the river and mountains. There is a fortification on the top of a nearby hill. The fortification is dating from XV century and from that place, a panorama with the mountains in the back, the place itself, and a huge space of the lake that surrounds it can be seen. The restaurants offering excellent cuisine of homemade specialties are located at the banks, under the pleasant shades of hundreds of years old treetops. There is also the main port with touristic sailboats.
Skadar Lake, on its space of 300 km2, is actually a freshwater sea. As a National Park, it represents the oasis for 264 kinds of birds. Its blue area is ornate with rugs of lotuses and great number of small inlets. Some of them still preserve the fortifications from the Ottoman Empire period, and some of them, the Orthodox monasteries. Discretely sneaked up into this friendly wilderness, hidden little beaches, ethno restaurants and domestic farms in which you can taste red wines and brandy the “rakija” of the best quality, are spread around. This region is famous for these products.
